The exhibition focuses on the use of a monochromatic colour pallet within sculpture, ceramics and works on paper.

By using various shades of black the artist draws the viewer's eye to the texture and composition of the form, while a single colour, the surface of Rodin’s bust of Balzac is full of character with numerous linear and circular marks on his arms and torso causing the light to refract and highlight certain areas. The stark contrast between black and white is accentuated within the works of Richard Serra and Edmund de Waal to create a powerful juxtaposition, Richard Serra experimented with solid black compositions throughout his career both in sculpture and works on paper.

The ceramic pieces featured in the exhibition by Bernard Leach and Emily Buck highlight the importance of shape, the absolute blackness of the forms forces the viewer to explore the empty space around the work and consider the silhouette. This is also evident within the maquettes by Michael Lyons which exploit the negative space, emphasising the severe lines.
