The present figures are almost embryonic in form, and fit into Moore’s larger exploration of classical sculpture found in his fallen warriors series. In common with Warrior without Shield, they are likely inspired by the Elgin’s marbles although in contrast they depict only the trunk and as a result are suggestive not of the spoils of war but of the ravages of time.
