Julio González 1876-1942
29 x 22 x 17.5 cm
The Hair consists of a semi-circular shaped metallic rod, elevated by a short straight rod placed on a stone plinth. Protruding from the curved semi-circle sits six short, slightly curved rods which fan out from all sides, representing the figures wild and untamed hair. This piece is emblematic of González’s work from the 1930s where he introduced a ‘linear structure’, with the use of metallic rods of different sizes to evoke the outline of forms and figures. This abstracted and elegant representation of a human head with unruly hair exemplifies the sophistication and inventiveness of Julio González's metallic structures.
Another version of this sculpture is held in the collection of the Pompidou, Paris.
