Tony Cragg b. 1949
64 x 31 x 28 cm
Offered on behalf of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to further their charitable causes.
Tony Cragg is recognised internationally as one of the most eminent sculptors working today, with works held in significant collections across the world. Cragg says of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, “it is a magnificent institution. I don’t know anywhere else like it”. His incredibly generous gift of Senders to YSP will make a significant contribution to supporting our ongoing work.
Senders forms part of an important wider series of the same name, encompassing domestic scale bronzes through to a monumental iteration in fibreglass that stands over 6 metres tall. They all belong to the family of work described by Cragg as Rational Beings. These sculptural works, that have their genesis in Cragg’s early stacked forms, meld abstraction and figuration. Human profiles and fleeting suggestions of the figure fade in and out of view.
I like to create the internal structure of things – the human figure is an organic form, but has so many geometries: our organs, bone structure, cells and molecules. Then I vary this structure until it has an emotional effect on me. Tony Cragg
